In music production software, musical element are usually placed on a timeline. For our Interaction Design master’s project, we made a system where there is no timeline. Musical elements are arranged in relation to other each other rather than a timeline. From observing producers use our system, we learned that their workflow was more experimenting compared to using their traditional software.
The system is an iPad app made in Swift that can communicate with the music software Ableton Live running on a Mac. The iPad and Mac communicated though OSC messages. In that way, we could control Ableton Live, and test our idea, without coding our own music software.
